41 backbends

Today I turned 41.

I am the healthiest and probably the happiest I have ever been in my entire 41 years of living.

My day will be spent teaching a cycling class this morning, then some sort of yummy lunch, followed by a massage and then dinner out with Curt and friends at our favorite restaurant, Le Bistro Montage.

This week my yoga sequence is backbends. One of the first yoga classes I taught (with my friend Sandra) was a backbends sequence and we named our class: Bringing Your Heart Into Backbends. I really like that so I am going with that name this week as well.

My yoga teacher training lineage goes back to BKS Iyengar. Iyengar believed backbends were important to practice as we age. He lived to 95 and died last year. He also believed that on your birthday you practice one backbend for each year of your life.

So this morning I practiced 41 backbends. This is the first year I have practiced this tradition and plan to continue it through the years.

I had first heard of this tradition last year when Tony Briggs, a yoga teacher in the Bay Area-ish, was turning 70 and … Continue reading

Being 40 is awesome

Friends, today I turned 40.

I have no issues with being 40. In fact, I am excited about it.

I have looked forward to this day for many years.

I have always looked much younger than I actually am. So I like shocking people with my true age. Just the other day someone told me they thought I was in my 20s.

Plus, years ago I decided my 40th birthday trip would be in Tahiti. And tomorrow Curt and I head off to Tahiti for a week! Eeeekkk! Can’t wait.

(For Curt’s 40th birthday trip we hit Oktoberfest in Munich. We also visited Budapest and Prague and had dinner with friends one night in Vienna. And had a chance to visit our German “family” in Stuttgart. That was a great trip.)

I remember when I thought 40 was old. Let me tell you kids … it isn’t.

For a long time in my early adulthood life was challenging. But that molded me to be the person I am today.

So far I have lived a fulfilling life. I have had to work hard for everything I have and everything I have done. And I am proud of that.

Today I am … Continue reading

Please say thank you

Thank you for reading my blog.

Please keep reading it.

Simple manners are so easy and quite appreciated.

This weekend I have the task of writing thank-you notes for my birthday gifts. It used to be a joke with friends that within a week of my birthday a thank-you card would arrive. I am not quite as quick these days.

I grew up with a woman who had my brother and me write thank-you notes for gifts received.

On Christmas morning right after we finished opening our gifts we marched to the phone and called all of our grandparents to thank them for their generosity.

As technology advances hand-written notes seem to have disappeared.

At first I was so not OK with this. I know we are all busy. But I am busy, too. And when I take time to buy someone something or make it I expected a hand-written note.

I have gotten a little more lenient on my feelings with this. A hand-written note is always welcomed and appreciated. But I am willing to take an e-mail or e-card. Texts–eh, not so much.

But the very least an acknowledgement is necessary. How does the person know you received … Continue reading

Longing for regular, healthy routine

So the Go Fit Girl! October Monthly Challenge has been really tough for me. (Click here to take you to the Facebook event.)

I am having a hard time for a variety of reasons: birthday; Oakland A’s playoff games; many dinners eating out; travel; Charlotte; work conference where vendors and law firms wine and dine.

In addition to all of the things I just listed I am having a bumpy time in life. It’s nothing major. But you know how sometimes you encounter bumps and hurdles?

Well, I am in that mode right now.

I have been drinking way more than normal, drinking a lot more caffeine, eating super unhealthy and rarely exercising.

I am looking forward to Monday when I plan to get out of this funk and rally back to my routine and healthy lifestyle.

I will be back to my regular exercise routine along with getting back to cooking meals for myself and eating so much better.

And I also plan to be back to my regular blogging routine as well.

This weekend I plan to nap, lounge, relax but also get some things done that I have been neglecting around the house. Oh, and … Continue reading

Having an unhealthy good time

Please note: This post was meant to go up last night. But I was having some technical difficulties getting my photos. So you get it this morning.

I used to be a very unhealthy person.

Now I consider myself fairly healthy.

The past couple of weeks I have ditched the healthy lifestyle because of travel, fun and a recent birthday. (Which I got to work tonight at a steakhouse and get some yummy chocolates and candle in a strawberry while also enjoying an amazing steak with fun friends, new and old.)

I am in Charlotte for a trademark conference/training. While here vendors and friends wine and dine you.

I have been staying up late, eating and drinking a lot more than usual, drinking way more caffeine than the norm and there has been some major snacking. And exercise has been minimal.

There has been some great networking and hanging out with my super fun UK friends, Harry and Iana. (They are lawbreakers!)

Even  though I am really enjoying hanging out with fun people … I feel really tired and unhealthy at the moment.

How do people maintain lifestyles like this all the time? I realized recently that when I was … Continue reading

Birthday card humor

Tonight’s post will be brief as I am doing laundry and packing for a business trip later this week.

If the A’s win tonight I will likely be going to Game 5 tomorrow, which is supposed to be my night to pack.

Since Game 4 is still going (and a rather exciting game), which The Husband was lucky to go to as well as our attendance last night I am preparing for the fact that I may not have time to pack tomorrow.

This means I am also paying bills and going through mail and all that stuff you have to do before you take off for a few days.

I had a great birthday yesterday with pampering and watching the A’s win last night. A great time.

So tonight I will post pics of two birthday cards I got.

Is Hallmark watching Go Fit Girl! and making cards to cater to me???

I hope to post at least a few times while I am in Charlotte for a trademark conference.

I can guarantee there will be lots of eating and drinking. At these types of events the vendors really take care of you and make sure you have plenty … Continue reading

Giving to others is the best gift

Remember when you were a little kid and you would be so excited about your birthday? As an adult I wait for that feeling and well, it doesn’t happen. I guess that is just part of getting older. Don’t get me wrong, I have no issues with getting older. In fact, I love it. I love when people are baffled by “how old” I really am.

Speaking of birthdays, today is my birthday. I take the day off from work to do stuff just for me.

I feel really lucky to have a job where it is OK to take the day off and is never questioned. And that I can pamper myself with a mani/pedi AND a massage. Yup, I went all out this year.

Since I had the day off I also had the opportunity to visit a women’s day center and drop off some donations.

I collect toiletries from hotels when I travel. I also have a high sensitivity to perfumes and lotions. So if I ever get those as gifts they get thrown into the donation pile and get used by someone else.

In my decluttering I got rid of lots of stuff, including some housewares.

Accountability=successful weight loss

At one point over the summer I realized I needed accountability with my food and drink intake. Even though I worked out almost every day I wasn’t monitoring my food intake and I wasn’t losing weight even though I wanted to get back to my goal weight.

I needed accountability with food tracking.

In the middle of June I rejoined Weight Watchers (just online) and started tracking my food again. I have had some downs–weeks where I wasn’t tracking or just didn’t want to track, weekends where I decided to be “off plan.”

At Week 2 I had to unexpectedly go to Tucson because my 90-year-old grandpa was going to have surgery. I decided because I knew I would likely be busy for the week that I would not worry about my caloric intake for that week.

Luckily all went well with my grandpa and his surgery. I spent a lot of time at the hospital. But I also was able to spend time with both of my parents, which included some eating out–drinking, Mexican food and other delicious stuff.

I recently hit my goal weight. I decided to lose 2 more pounds, which gives me a little wiggle room.

Health and wellness birthday gifts

For my birthday my in-laws gave me an REI gift card. I plan to use it toward a new yoga mat.I think Curt and I are going to go shopping this weekend.

I also got some cash from Grandma so that will go toward the yoga mat or a yoga block/brick. (Before each yoga class I take a little time for me. My back has been bothering me lately. So I do a supported bridge pose before each class starts.)

My Dad and Hilda got me a subscription to Yoga Journal. I am looking forward to start getting the magazine.

I also got a Nordstrom gift card from my Mom. I am debating if I should use it toward my health and wellness or just something super cute and super fun: like some awesome boots.

When I went on to the Nordstrom web site and searched “exercise” I found some good stuff and this. What the hell? Maybe if I was a wife on The Sopranos.

It’s my birthday … not really … party anyway

Years ago I was doing a puzzle with my youngest nephew. He was and is awesome at puzzles especially at the age he was, which I think was 4 or 5. He got a difficult piece in an adult puzzle and I kinda sang, Go, Jackson. It’s your birthday. He looked at me and said, no, it’s not. So then he created his own version: It’s my birthday … not really … party anyway.

Yes, there is a point to my post. My birthday is next month. And I want to get a new yoga mat. The one I have is kinda cheap and frankly, a little slippery, which isn’t so great when in certain poses, like Downward Facing Dog.

With family we don’t exchange Christmas presents as we focus on charity instead. But we still do birthday gifts, especially since it is a “special day.” There are only a few friends I exchange gifts with for birthdays these days.

My mom probably already bought my gift … (and it probably has a cat on it.) 🙂 But for anyone who is actually gonna get me a gift I am asking for REI gift cards, where I plan to purchase … Continue reading
