Celebrating community

Yoga has given me the opportunity to meet so many great people and make some amazing friends.

I regularly take classes at two yoga studios in Oakland/Berkeley.

One of the studios, Namaste, which has a total of three studios in Oakland and Berkeley, celebrated its 10th anniversary. And Namaste threw a big party today.

There was music played by Adrienne Shamszad; dancing by Nubia Teixeira; and the night ended with Jai Uttal and band playing some amazing Kirtan

One of the great things about being a part of yoga studios and classes is that you become part of a community. 

Even though I didn’t know a lot of people there I saw so many friendly faces. And I did get to spend the evening with one of my favorite people who is a great friend and an amazing yoga teacher along with another super fun yoga teacher and friend.

We had so much fun dancing and singing. It was great to see so many sharing such a fun time. It truly was a community dancing, singing and celebrating.

Exercising while on vacation

Another great thing about Club Med is there are activities for just about everyone.

(And if your thing is to just lounge at the beach and drink, there’s plenty of that for you. That’s my favorite pastime.)

Like most trips I brought exercise clothes with me. And about half the time they don’t leave the suitcase. This trip seems to be turning out that way.

Besides, sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba and other water activities “regular” exercise classes are also offered along with a gym.

There’s power walking, stretching (which I think is kinda like yoga, but since I haven’t gone I am not certain), abs and butts, Zumba, boot camp, water aerobics, etc.

There is also the circus where I tried doing tricks on the trampoline. It’s fun, but man, is that a work out. I probably did 15 minutes on the trampoline and then took a break before trying the trapeze.

The beginners got a quick lesson on how to stand, hold the bar and the few tricks we were going to do.

Burning calories out on the dance floor

On Saturday night Curt and I went to a wedding, which was attended by a few other good friends.

It was a beautiful ceremony and a great party.

Free flowing sparkling wine and beer among some other adult beverages. I took part in wine, sparkling wine and water. I had some delicious lamb for dinner as well.

I judge a wedding by the party. And this wedding gets great props for a fun DJ who played danceable (is that even a word?) music, which made for an awesome time.

I danced so much that my calves are still sore today.

(And my lower back is a little sore as well. That could have something to do with dancing in heels most of the night.)

I have been told I am a good dancer. And not to toot my own horn, but I think I am.

Regardless, I just get out there and have a good time and don’t really care whether I am good or not. My dancing includes a lot of jumping and use of my arms and hands. I really get into it and have a ton of fun.

Dancing off those calories

This has been a great long weekend.

I took Friday off, giving myself a 4-day weekend instead of a three. Sweet!

Friday morning I had a dentist appointment and then took the car in for maintenance.

After that the de-cluttering of the spare room/office began. I have worked on this room every day since Friday.

I have a lot of shredding to do and a few more things to sort through and Curt has some stuff to go through. But other than that it is nearing completion and the room is starting to look more as it should be and becoming presentable.

On Saturday night our friends Monica and Giovanni hosted Fiesta Italiana. (I know them from spin class at the gym. Over the past year various friends have hosted parties or dinner parties.)

The food was amazing. Oh man, it was so good! Others brought salads and the rest of us made sure we were in good supply of booze. I am always good at supplying booze. Curt and I brought Italian wine and beer.

As with most “spin parties” they turn into a dance party.

Exercise, vegetables and dancing … oh my!

Sorry for the slacking in blogging. But rest assured I have not been slacking in the exercise or the caloric intake department.

Let’s see. What have I been up to since I last blogged on Tuesday …

On Wednesday I walked with some co-workers/friends. It was a small group, but we were/are fierce. The walk started off rather cool. But eventually we were warmed up and feeling good. We walked for an hour. And we were faster than last week. In our first 30 minutes we got farther than we did the week before. I kinda dreaded the hour walk. But once we got going I felt great! Wednesday night I went to Baxter’s Hatha yoga class, which was packed.

Thursday my friend/co-worker and I went out to lunch. We had Chinese food. I had a cup of hot and sour soup and steamed veggies over brown rice. I really wanted kung pao chicken, but I refrained. Thursday afternoon I hit the gym at work. I decided to not spin as the seat is jacked up. (The repair guy is coming tomorrow.) Sweaty weekend

As I blogged yesterday, I worked out for my usual two hours at the gym: spin, abs and body conditioning.

Last night one of my fellow spin friends hosted a party at her house. There was good food, good wine and good company. Eventually it turned into a dance party. Oh man, it was so much fun. But my legs were still tired from my earlier workout. We danced the night away. It was fun but tiring and super sweaty.

This morning I took a morning Vinyasa Yoga class. The heat in that class gets turned up slightly–between 75 and 80 degrees. But man, does it get sweaty. It was a good workout.

My arms are pretty sore from the weights yesterday. I think the heat and the actual yoga practice helps to loosen my muscles–work through the soreness.

Shake those hips

I attended my third Zumba class tonight. I feel less dorky but still dorky.

It is a lot of fun and an amazing and sweaty workout. Heidi keeps it fun. She cracks me up when she tells us to be sexy. I so don’t feel sexy. And the fact that the mirror is in front of us doesn’t really help. But whatever. I have a great time.

One of the women who takes the class said tonight, I want to dance! The class is still kinda beginner. The thing is the pace is pretty fast for me. I am pretty OK with the pace right now. I am hoping after a few more classes I will feel even more comfortable.

Tough spin class

I was tired and didn’t want to go to spin today. But hey, it is Day 2 of living a healthier lifestyle.

So I made sure I went. When Boku (teacher) arrived I asked him if he had good music tonight. He said he hoped so. And he did. He played some great music, including It’s Raining Men. I told him after class I wanted to jump off my bike and start dancing. (Sometimes Boku plays some weird music.)

It was a tough class. Boku even said it was tough for him. But it was a good work out. And I am glad I went and worked hard.

Weight loss and fat butts

I did a weigh-in yesterday. Lost 1.6 pounds. I had planned to count my calories the past week but quit after breakfast on Day 1. But I was careful about what I ate and was conscious of my consumption. Apparently that made a difference. (I was surprised, too, since I didn’t get to work out as much as I would have liked last week–2 days of yoga and a night of dancing.)

One of my friends on Facebook posted a link to a story titled Fat Butts May Be Healthy. It’s an interesting read. No matter how much weight I lose I will always have a big butt and hips.

Dancing is a great work out

Friday night was my company holiday party.

I ate a little more than I probably should have. And had 3-4 glasses of wine.

But man, I danced like crazy. My calves still hurt tonight from all that jumping around, having fun, sweating and being a dancing fool. I love dancing. And it’s a great work out.

Because of certain things this past week I only went to yoga twice and no other working out (besides the dancing, of course). I am going out of town this coming weekend (hoping to take in some walks over the weekend). But I am planning on working out at the gym before heading to Phoenix on Friday.
