During Portland’s last snowstorm I knew I would have many classes canceled.
We’ve had several snowstorms/ice storms since December that it’s difficult to keep track.
But one of the more major ones in December had me going stir crazy. I knew I couldn’t just binge watch TV during another–and yes there was another and another …
In mid-January I decided that each day I was snowed in I would film a different online yoga class.
I did a basics yoga class, which you can find here. Then I got sick and didn’t tape any more.
I had some time on Friday to experiment with a chair yoga online class, which can be found here.

I don’t teach gentle or chair yoga classes. But I have enough knowledge to experiment. My students range from beginner to injured to in their 20s to their 70s (sometimes I even teach kids) to very flexible to very inflexible to practicing once a week to practicing almost every day to being a yoga teacher to someone who has a regular home practice to someone who is intermediate or advanced.

I had a student recently ask me what poses she should not be doing while pregnant.
I told her what I knew off hand. But I told her I would do some research and let her know the next time I saw her.
So this, of course, has prompted a post.
If you are pregnant you should check in with your doctor and discuss any form of exercise, yoga included. Please make sure to discuss with your doctor since I am not a doctor and I am not your doctor.
After you tell your doctor and partner that you are pregnant you should tell your yoga teacher that you are pregnant. Sometimes we can’t tell because you are so early and/or aren’t showing. And if you are showing, we can’t assume you are pregnant because … what if you’re not …

Yoga poses you should avoid when pregnant:
- deep twists
- lying (flat) on your back (once into your second trimester)
- lying on your belly (first trimester is likely OK, after that it should be avoided)

September is National Yoga Month. I know that. But the weird thing is I am having a hard time finding a lot of current information on this.
In honor of of this month I thought I would FINALLY respond to a request from my friend Rosie.
Months ago she asked me for advice for someone who wanted to start practicing yoga.
When I started regularly practicing yoga a little more than five years ago I first started practicing at the gym. For me I was lucky, those classes were good beginner classes. And the instructors were well-experienced teachers as well.
When I started at Namaste I felt lucky then as well, too. All the teachers are pretty amazing and experienced and versatile. I have practiced with many yoga instructors, personalities, styles, types of yoga, class sizes, etc.
So here is my advice to Rosie and anyone else who wants it:
