Ugh! Black Friday

I wrote about this last year.

I have never been a fan of Black Friday, for a variety of reasons. Initially it was the crowds and the crazies and the mayhem.

I still feel that way. But now there seems to be a lot of ugliness and greed and that makes it even less appealing to me.

When (I) we still gave Christmas presents I made sure to have my list checked off before Thanksgiving. Once online shopping became a reality I did all my shopping online.

For the past many years (I don’t remember how long we have been doing this) our families decided to no longer give Christmas gifts. No one really needs anything. And really, who needs another sweater or candle or something you don’t really want?

So instead we give money to charity. We all have done different things. We have given to local charities, Charity Choice Gift Cards, Heifer International, food banks, Planned Parenthood, etc.

There are so many people who don’t even have the basics, let alone Christmas gifts.

I am a huge advocate of helping others, around the holidays and all year long.

Curt and I have a new charity … Continue reading

Taking care of No. 1

As a woman I have to remind myself that I need to take care of me, too.

I have a long commute to work and a long day during the week as I get up between 5:15 and 5:30 most mornings. At times my job can be demanding and stressful.

Even though I am not a mother I am usually worrying about someone else or thinking about someone else or making sure things get done for someone else.

In order to take care of others we have to take care of No. 1 first. Otherwise we really can’t take care of others as well as we think we should.

Lately I have been getting a massage once a month. For years I have gotten massages regularly. And when money is OK I make sure to do it more often.

Today I got a massage from my awesome massage therapist Thanh at Bellissima Day Spa in Berkeley, where I have been going for more than seven years. Thanh is amazing with her hands. She is also a good, kind and hard working person. She cares about me and the feeling is mutual.

Today as she was working me I realized … Continue reading

Want to shop AND support your favorite health, fitness blogger?

Remember earlier this week when I said there was a way you could support Go Fit Girl! even more than you already do as a reader (and hopefully as a commenter)?

Well, today I am going to tell you how you can fully support GFG!

Go Fit Girl! has her own Amazon store. You can use that <– link or you can go to the About page on the blog or you can click on any item in the My Favorites you see to the right –> on the blog.

By buying items from the Go Fit Girl! Amazon store  you are showing extra support.

Go Fit Girl!’s Webmaster (aka The Husband) and I will continually add items to the store. I am already working on more items to add.

If there is something you want to see in the store just let me know and we can add it. You can post the item in the comments section or e-mail me the link at ann@gofitgirl.com

And thanks again to all of my readers, for your comments and your support. It means so much to me.

Now let’s start shopping!

Exercise, vegetables and dancing … oh my!

Sorry for the slacking in blogging. But rest assured I have not been slacking in the exercise or the caloric intake department.

Let’s see. What have I been up to since I last blogged on Tuesday …

On Wednesday I walked with some co-workers/friends. It was a small group, but we were/are fierce. The walk started off rather cool. But eventually we were warmed up and feeling good. We walked for an hour. And we were faster than last week. In our first 30 minutes we got farther than we did the week before. I kinda dreaded the hour walk. But once we got going I felt great! Wednesday night I went to Baxter’s Hatha yoga class, which was packed.

Thursday my friend/co-worker and I went out to lunch. We had Chinese food. I had a cup of hot and sour soup and steamed veggies over brown rice. I really wanted kung pao chicken, but I refrained. Thursday afternoon I hit the gym at work. I decided to not spin as the seat is jacked up. (The repair guy is coming tomorrow.) So I walked for about 20 minutes on the treadmill and then did weights and abs for about … Continue reading

Sore, tired body

This will be a short post as I am tired and well, just bleh.

Tuesday night Jenn and I did some weight work on our back and shoulders (among other stuff).

Yesterday I worked from home so I attended the Power Vinyasa yoga class at the studio in my neighborhood. Naushon really had us focus on doing upward dog properly, by pushing our chest forward and our shoulders down.

Between the work on shoulders/back Tuesday night and the yoga class yesterday and the crappy sleep I have gotten the past FOUR nights I woke up today with super sore shoulders and upper back.

I know being sore like this is a good thing as I am working my muscles and getting stronger. But it still is not that comfortable.

(Tonight at the gym I did intervals for spin and a little ab work. I did some stretching of my back and shoulders as well.)

After I got home I took a nice hot shower. Then I slathered my refreshing gel on my shoulders and upper back. I am feeling a little better. I am relaxing while blogging, watching TV, drinking wine and having a dinner of leftovers.

(This is … Continue reading

How to survive Black Friday: Just don’t do it

I have to say each year I get more disgusted by the idea of Black Friday, the commercials, the greed associated with Christmas.

Years ago with both sides of our families we decided to stop giving each other Christmas presents. No one needs anything. And really, a new candle or CD or shirt or whatever–we can all get those ourselves. So instead we give money to charity.

The stress of having to buy the perfect gift is eliminated; battling those crazy crowds … gone; spending money on something someone may or may not like … goodbye; never getting an acknowledgement or thank you for a gift you purchased … buh-bye; worrying about your Christmas shopping budget … adios.

The joy, pride and sense of being a good human being you get from giving to someone who really needs something: food, clothes, a new backpack, toys (when they aren’t normally under the tree), school supplies, healthcare, a home, education, pajamas, books, etc.) is the most amazing feeling and makes you feel like a better person. To me, that is the true meaning of Christmas.

More and more I reflect on the fact that there are so many people in this country and … Continue reading

Health and wellness birthday gifts

For my birthday my in-laws gave me an REI gift card. I plan to use it toward a new yoga mat.I think Curt and I are going to go shopping this weekend.

I also got some cash from Grandma so that will go toward the yoga mat or a yoga block/brick. (Before each yoga class I take a little time for me. My back has been bothering me lately. So I do a supported bridge pose before each class starts.)

My Dad and Hilda got me a subscription to Yoga Journal. I am looking forward to start getting the magazine.

I also got a Nordstrom gift card from my Mom. I am debating if I should use it toward my health and wellness or just something super cute and super fun: like some awesome boots.

When I went on to the Nordstrom web site and searched “exercise” I found some good stuff and this. What the hell? Maybe if I was a wife on The Sopranos.

Snacky obsession

Lately I have been having some major cravings for Roasted Seaweed Snacks from Trader Joe’s.

They have become my latest snack obsession.

I was at Trader’s last week and bought four packs. They went quickly. I kept thinking about those things today. When I got back to Emeryville after the shuttle bus ride I headed directly to TJ’s to get some more seaweed snacks. They had a decent amount in stock so I thought I better stock up myself as they don’t always have them.

So I bought 15 packs. They are only 99 cents. So how could I not stock up?

They are vegan and gluten free–neither matters to me. But does to some, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

If you eat the whole package, which is very easy to do, it is only 60 calories, 4 grams of fat, 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein. There are just 4 ingredients: seaweed, sea salt and two kinds of oil.

Lesson learned

So don’t have sushi the night before your WW weigh-in (WI). In fact, it probably isn’t a good idea to have sushi two days in a row right before your WI.

The scale said I gained two pounds. I know that I didn’t actually gain two pounds. It was water weight from the sodium. But it still sucks.

My leader said likely next week I will have a much more drastic drop in weight.

As they say on the WW message boards, I had a NSV (nonscale victory) with all the new clothes I bought. I mentioned my new clothing sizes in the meeting today. It was pretty exciting.

And I received a charm for my key chain. The key chain I got when I hit my 10% goal. The charm is for losing 25 pounds (which I hit 26 last week). I got the reward this week because last week I was the only one in the meeting so it wouldn’t have been much of a celebration! Ha!

Anyway, Erica and Casey are coming into town this weekend. So it will be a challenge to stay on track foodwise. Wish me luck.
