As we get ready to enter what I call the Crazy Time Season we have to remember to take care of ourselves.
Self-care is so important but we tend to neglect taking care of No. 1.
I truly believe you can’t take care of anyone else unless you take care of yourself.
Self-care comes in many forms. For me it can be a yoga class (where I am a student), my monthly massage, an occasional mani/pedi, vegging on the couch binge watching my favorite shows, knitting, restorative yoga, enjoying good cup of coffee or tea while just sipping and enjoying …
Maybe for you it’s any of the things I listed above or it could be a bubble bath, a hike, a bike ride … or something else.
Stress is a big part of our everyday lives.
When restorative yoga is practiced regularly and even as little as five minutes a day, it can help to heal the effects of chronic stress. Adrenal fatigue is a common and growing problem in modern life. Restorative yoga kicks in the parasympathetic nervous system, rest and digest.

Like a car we need to fuel our bodies.
I was talking to a friend recently telling her how I am teaching five cycle classes a week (among numerous yoga classes). Her next question was, are you in crazy great shape? (That’s not a quote. But she said something like that.)
I told her I am maintaining my weight and am content. (I like to eat and drink … in moderation, of course.)
But because I am not currently tracking my food I need to be careful and make sure that I am still eating the right things and enough even with my regular cardio workout.
When the cardio increases and/or the exercise gets intense we need to make sure our bodies have enough “fuel,” such as protein, carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, fat and even saturated fat, among many other nutrients.
I am a big believer in protein. I can tell when I haven’t had enough of it. And I know that I need a well-balanced diet.
Protein has a lot more functions than repairing and growing muscle tissue. … Protein increases satiety at meals, which can lead to overall decreased calorie consumption, according to an article in Muscle & Fitness.

I was born, bred and educated (Bear Down!) in Tucson, Ariz.
I was recently in Tucson to attend a family friend wedding and to visit my own family.
I come from a decent-sized Mexican-American family (both sides).
I haven’t lived in Tucson for about 17 years. Wow! I left at the end of 1997.
But most of my family has always lived in Tucson.
In the past when I would come home for visits I would run all over town trying to visit “everyone.”
At some point I had to stop doing that. Visiting family is already stressful and exhausting (and wonderful) and I was wearing myself out.
My priorities had to adjust during my visits and they are my parents and my grandparents (my mom’s mom and my dad’s dad). Anyone after that is icing on the cake.
My parents are divorced. So that adds another dynamic to the mix.
I know some family members (and even friends) may be offended if I can’t visit or don’t even contact them. I am sorry for that. But I just can’t. It’s too much for me.

Happy New Year!
Wow, another year has gone by.
2014 was a big year of change for me: entering into a new environment at work with many changes; completing my yoga teacher training; becoming a yoga teacher; teaching yoga classes; quitting my job; continuing to teach yoga classes; making the decision with The Husband to pack everything up and move to Portland; get certified as a SPINNING® instructor; get on the subbing schedule at my gym (for a month) to teach indoor cycling classes (one down, four to go); packing up the house and also doing a cleanse of donating many items and throwing a bunch of stuff away …
(And let’s not forget our travels: Visiting family in Tucson and Missouri. Our annual March Madness trip to Vegas with good friends. A trip to Amsterdam with a good friend while visiting more good friends. And the ultimate–my 40th birthday trip to Bora Bora.)
Many of the changes in 2014 were good. But some weren’t. I try to remind myself that everything happens for a reason.

For the month of December I took part in a 31-day Savasana challenge.
My teacher Vickie who was my first Restorative Yoga teacher (and one of my regular yoga teachers) challenged her students to do a 31-day Savasana challenge.
Savasana is a relaxed and restorative pose where you can be supported by blankets and bolsters (as you see in the picture to the left) and where your head and heart are on the same level. This is a time to quiet the body and the mind.
The month of December is stressful with the holidays, food, alcohol, family, parties, friends, end of year …
When we don’t think we have time for ourselves, whether that’s yoga, Savasana, time reading a good book, taking a bath, just sitting down for 10-15 minutes to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, etc. is when we need it most.
For the most part the challenge was fairly easy for me since I am not working full time.

I know that there are so many things challenging about the holidays. There is stress, overeating, over drinking … etc.
But we can overcome a lot of that and stay on a healthy track.
When I quit my job a little more than two months ago I thought the weight would fall off and I would easily fall back to my goal weight rather quickly.
Well, that didn’t happen and then I went on vacation.
Once back from vacation I got back on the healthy eating and regular exercise routine with indoor cycling and yoga (both public classes and my own home practice). I was also able to control my stress levels much more at that point.
I have been at it for about six weeks and am pleased with my results.
Yes, it can be difficult to maintain healthy living during the holidays. But it is possible.
When I first started on my weight loss track eight years ago I lost weight over Thanksgiving and Christmas.
So far this year I lost weight over Thanksgiving. I made sure to get my exercise in last week while still enjoying food and wine, all in moderation.

Recently I saw stuff about Jennifer Garner and her baby bump.
Jennifer Garner admits she has a baby bump but is not pregnant on the Ellen DeGeneres show.
She’s had three kids and now there is a bump and she says it ain’t going away.
Society as a whole is so obsessed with women and their weight.
Why don’t we talk about men and their bellies? Wow, he musta put down a 6-pack last night and a bag of Doritos! How is he gonna show off his body in that bathing suit next month??!!
In the silly movie, Couples Retreat, all the women are in super amazing (dare I say, unrealistic) shape and the guy’s are a bunch of out of shape slobs. I realize our bodies can’t be perfect, but what message is that sending? This is the best picture I could find of the whole main cast.
Guess what, friends? You can have a “baby bump” and have never even had a baby.
It’s called a big meal, being bloated, stress, water retention, bad posture, a little extra weight on the tummy, etc.

Today is the first day of what I am referring to as FUNemployment.
I quit my job of nine years and yesterday was my last day in the corporate world.

Today I started a new chapter and I am “undoing.”
In my yoga class last night our theme was about undoing. It seemed so appropriate for me and this new … adventure I am taking on.
Baxter has his students set an intention at the beginning of each yoga class. I love setting an intention. (I have written about it a few times. Here’s one of my past posts.)

I am a regular coffee drinker. At work I usually have one cup in the morning. The days I work from home and weekends I usually have two cups.
A couple of weeks ago I was really tired at work and upped my coffee intake to two cups.
By Wednesday of that week I had a raging headache, which continued for the next three days.
That Saturday morning I skipped the indoor cycling class I planned on taking because a throbbing head while riding just doesn’t work for me.
Pretty much as soon as I had my first cup of coffee my headache was gone.
It was suggested to me recently that there is a relationship between coffee (caffeine) and our adrenals. From what I understand about exhaustion and adrenal fatigue this makes sense to me. So I did some research.
According to Livestrong, caffeine may trigger the release of adrenaline (a hormone), giving you a quick burst of energy and physical strength followed by a crash marked by fatigue and irritability, in some cases.
Not all doctors agree on how caffeine affects the body’s release of adrenaline or whether it affects it at all.
